10 New skills you can learn at home within a month

January 7, 2026

The skills you learn form the foundation for success, whether that’s in your career, finances, health, or relationships.

Skills matter.

The best part? Building new skills has never been easier. Thanks to the internet, you can learn almost anything within a month. That gives you the freedom to try out many different skills before deciding which ones to master.

And here’s the key: experimenting.

Most people freeze up when they think about the years it takes to “master” a skill. But you don’t need mastery to benefit. You only need to start. By testing out different skills, you’ll quickly discover which ones excite you most and those are the ones worth doubling down on.

That said, a good starting point is knowing who you are. What aligns naturally with your personality? What skills and strengths do you already possess? These insights hone down the options to explore.

That’s why I recommend taking one of the best personality tests. It’s a great filter to help you stop wasting time moving into the wrong direction, and focus on the skills that best suit you.

That said, in this article, I’ll provide many ideas for skills to learn, grouped into four categories:

  • Valuable skills in general
  • Highly profitable career skills
  • Useful things to learn in life
  • Cool and fun skills to learn

10 Valuable skills to learn for ambitious people

The most valuable skills are transferable skills. They work across industries, careers, and even personal life. Mastering just a few can accelerate your success and improve your quality of life.

#0: Speed reading

Although technically not a skill (hence #0), self-discovery is one of the most beneficial things to do at a young age. While I was distracted by gaming and later on “quick ways to become successful”, I only felt more lost as time progressed.

Even after achieving success in my corporate job, and then experiencing the freedom to travel around the world as a freelancer, something felt off…

Without self-awareness, you’ll keep bumping your head against the wall.

The fastest way to get those insights? Take one of the best personality tests. I recommend the full report of the “16 personality test“. Then upload your report to ChatGPT and ask it all the questions you’re curious about (e.g., what are my top strengths, what future-proof careers can I capitalize on with my strengths, etc.)

#1: Speed reading

Speed reading helps you read and process information faster — while retaining more. Think of all the reading you already do: emails, books, contracts, research, manuals, recipes, and more.

If you’d like to absorb more knowledge in less time, speed reading is worth learning. Become a SuperLearner is a fantastic course to get started.

#2: Foreign language

Speaking multiple languages is impressive, and it opens doors both professionally and socially.

The best way to learn?

Full immersion by living in a country that speaks the language.

But if that’s not possible, there are excellent online programs. I personally use Rocket Languages for Spanish because it’s structured and beginner-friendly. You can try any of their 14 popular languages for free!

#3: Public Speaking

Terrifying? Yes, for most. Valuable? Absolutely.

Public speaking builds social confidence, teaches you to communicate clearly, and helps you inspire others. Whether you’re presenting, leading a meeting, teaching, or simply holding better conversations, it’s one of the most profitable skills you can learn.

Here are great beginner resources:

#4: Communication skills

Effective communication is one of the most important skills you can learn. And while public speaking improves your ability to communicate well, it’s a much bigger topic that you can split into several sections.

Public speaking is just one branch of communication. Truly mastering communication means:

  • Listening with intent
  • Showing empathy
  • Reading body language
  • Expressing ideas clearly
  • Using tone and silence to influence and engage

It’s a lifelong pursuit — but even small improvements set you apart immediately.

Start here:

  • How to Win Friends and Influence People (book)
  • Speak Smoothly, Clearly & Confidently (course)
  • Communication Fundamentals to Communicate Better (course)

#5: Writing skills

Writing is thinking made visible. From emails and reports to blogs and books — strong writing is a superpower. Clear, persuasive writing makes you stand out in business and in life.

Here’s where to begin:

  • How To Become An Exceptional Writer (course)
  • Better Business Writing Skills (course)
  • Everybody Writes (book)

#6: Networking skills

Your network really is your net worth. Every connection can open doors, not only to their world but to their entire network. Expanding your social skills and network creates opportunities that wouldn’t exist otherwise.

Learn how you can double your social skills.

#7: Critical thinking skills

We’re bombarded with 70+ GB of information every single day. Most of it is biased or inaccurate. Critical thinking helps you filter truth from noise.

Start by questioning your assumptions and becoming curious about other perspectives. Even fun strategy-based games like Solitaire can sharpen your critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

#8: Problem-solving skills

Problem-solving is about creating solutions where others see roadblocks. It turns you into an idea machine.

Here’s how to practice:

  • Cross-apply practices from one field to another
  • Use critical thinking to broaden perspective
  • Brainstorm as many solutions as possible before judging

#9: Digital literacy

Being digitally literate means more than knowing how to use your phone. It’s about understanding the digital landscape, from apps to emerging tech like AI, blockchain, and quantum computing.

You don’t need to master everything. But curiosity will keep you future-proof. Explore the Complete Digital Transformation Masterclass.

#10: Coding skills

Want to peek behind the curtain of the digital world?

Coding is where it all starts.

Even learning basic coding helps you build small tools, understand technology better, and open new opportunities. And while AI already takes over many coding jobs, it’s still one of the best skills to develop to understand how the online world works.

Final thoughts

Learning skills is easier than ever, and experimenting with them is the fastest way to find what you truly love. Imagine learning one new skill every month for a year: 12 new abilities in just 12 months!

Mastery takes years, yes. But passion fuels persistence, and you’ll only find passion by trying many things. So, pick a skill from the list, dive in, and see what excites you. Stay curious, keep exploring, and enjoy the process.
