If you’re reading this you’re already ahead of most people. Most people can’t stand the idea of having a morning routine. Only the idea of waking up to start the day cringes most of us.
Yet, everyone has a morning routine already. If the first thing you do is snooze your alarm in the morning, that’s part of your morning routine. If you drink coffee in the morning or eat breakfast, that’s also part of your morning routine.
I’m a huge believer that how you start your day, is going to determine your success for the rest of that day. If you start your day powerful and with enthusiasm, who’s going to steal this day away from you? Exactly, no one.
What’s Your Morning Routine?
Whether you know it or not, you’ve got a morning routine. What do you do the first thing when getting out of bed?
Do you check your social media first thing in the morning? Maybe you even do this while you’re still in bed.
Most people don’t know that they’ve got a morning routine because it all goes automatically. Many of us wake up to watch the social media, take a shower, maybe coffee and breakfast, and then on the way to work.
Do you feel like a zombie this way?
If you do, you unconsciously already know …
Why A Morning Routine Is Important
A morning routine helps you to start your day with energy. Instead of slacking behind for the rest of the day, this is the moment you should kick the day in its butt. A morning routine should empower you to face the challenges of that particular day.
Besides, if you don’t take the morning for yourself to do what empowers you, what’s really happening? You’re basically saying that you’re not important enough for your own time.
Does it happen to you that you race to work every morning, just to make someone else happy? Do you come back home late to then unleash your frustrations onto your loved ones? Do you feel tired and frustrated and waste your evenings watching television?
Stop doing that now!
I’m not telling you to quit your job. You might see that as your only solution but it’s not. You don’t have to start your day to make other people happy! The decision is yours to give yourself the best time of the day.
You’re a champion and it’s about time that you act like one. Make the first hour of your day for you, and no one else.
Yes, that means no social media or WhatsApp when you wake up.
Morning Routines Of Successful People
A morning routine isn’t rocket science, yet they’re extremely effective. Many celebrities and successful entrepreneurs have a morning routine in place. Let’s have a look at some.
Natural daylight wakes up Richard Branson at 5 am. Richard then goes on to play some tennis, goes for a run, or does some kitesurfing. After breakfast, Richard spends time with his family before connecting with the rest of the world.
Tony Robbins starts his day with priming. Priming is a breathing technique that Tony uses. He combines this with an exercise to practice gratitude, connection, and visualization. He follows this up with a short but intensive exercise routine.
Her dogs wake her up around 6 am in the morning. Oprah Winfrey begins with a short moment of gratitude towards a new day. Oprah takes time for herself through a 20-minute meditation session in the morning.
Former Navy SEAL Jocko Willink wakes up at 4.30am! Listen here why:
Some Quick Wins In The Morning
You must make the first hours of a new day for you. Maybe you find it difficult to wake up earlier or to set time aside for a powerful morning routine. There are some quick wins that you should start doing today, regardless of your availability in the mornings.
Don’t Snooze Your Alarm
If you snooze, you lose. You’ve probably heard this saying before. Maybe you’re thinking, who cares about 10 minutes of extra sleep? It’s not so much that you lose 10 minutes of time in the morning.
The morning has a big impact on the phase of your day. If you start the day with a snooze, you’re conditioning yourself to procrastinate.
Instead, wake up straight away. Sure, you feel tired. But that’s not going to go away in 10 minutes. In fact, it may get worse.
Make Up Your Bed
If you look for a quick win in the morning, make up your bed. Tim Ferriss swears that making up your bed is the quick win that you need in the morning.
After watching this speech from Admiral William H. McRaven, I decided it was time to make my first step in changing the world. I didn’t always make my bed in the morning, especially not when I was in a rush.
But implementing this simple habit can make a big difference in how you feel. It’s so simple and that’s exactly why you should do it. Hitting this quick win makes you feel happier in the morning, regardless of whether you’re late or not.
“If you can’t do the little things right, you’ll never be able to do the big things right”
– Admiral William H. McRaven
Drink some Water
Another quick and easy win. Drink some water. You already know how important it’s to drink water. You may not see a direct impact like you do with making up your bed. Yet, drinking water can help you to kickstart your day.
In your sleep, you dehydrate yourself. Drinking 2 glasses of water in the morning helps to get you up and running again. Water also improves your skin so you’ll not only feel fresh but look fresh.
What’s The Best Morning Routine For Success?
The best morning routine is the one that empowers you the most! You’ll only find out what the best morning routine is for you, through experimentation.
But if you truly love yourself, you must take time out of your day for your own development. No matter if you’ve to wake up early for work, a morning routine sets you up for the day.
Besides, if you don’t make yourself happy first, then how are you going to make others happy the rest of the day? No one likes a grumpy colleague, right?
The first hour of the day is your hour. Use this hour to connect with yourself, exercise the body, and exercise the mind.
Connect With Yourself
A great way to connect with yourself is through breathing exercises. As long as you’re alive, your breath will be with you. Breathing is an essential part of life.
Most people take breathing for granted but it’s a great way to connect with yourself. A cold shower forces you to connect with your breath instantaneously.
But there are other ways to connect with yourself through your breath. Meditation is one of these ways and this has many health benefits. In the Western world, we’re only now starting to become aware of the power of meditation.
Meditation also practices the mind through the skill of focus. And Tim Ferriss, who has interviewed many high-performers, noticed that most of them practice meditation every day.
Exercise Your Body
Exercise gets you straight into your body. When you start the day with exercise, you start your engine in a powerful way. Who doesn’t feel great after exercise?
Besides, your body is your own vehicle. If this vehicle isn’t in a healthy state, you cannot use it to its best abilities. Keep your vehicle running by consuming healthy foods and exercise on a regular basis.
Exercise in the following areas for complete health benefits: strength, endurance, and flexibility. Each of them trains your body in a different way. You can rotate exercises so that you don’t get bored.
If you don’t have much time for exercise or if you’re already active in sports, it’s interesting for you to look into some yoga.
I’ve found that yoga is one of the most amazing ways to start my day.
Because it activates all the muscles in your body without being too intense. It’s a way of exercising that connects the body with the mind.
On top of that, you become more flexible and you combat the time you spend behind a desk. This is also very beneficial for your posture.
Therefore, if you don’t have much time in the morning for a full workout session, at least make sure you do a short yet powerful yoga session.
It’s one of the greatest ways of exercising to start your day.
Exercise Your Mind
Your mind is extremely important. This means that you have to treat it with care. If you want to get to the next level in life, you need to know how to get there. This means that you have to feed the mind with new information.
Would you like to learn a new skill or language for your job? You might want to invest your money into something, but you don’t know what yet. Maybe you would like to learn something about the new relationship that you started. Perhaps there are children on the way?
You get the point. Learning is a vital aspect of our lives that never goes away. No matter how old you’re, you must keep learning to stay on top of your game. And be honest with yourself, don’t you like to learn something new?
Schedule time into your morning routine for yourself to learn. A fast way is through books. If you don’t like reading, start listening to audiobooks. You can even go for a walk in the morning while you’re taking up new information through audiobooks.
Morning Routine With Your Partner
If you and your partner are on the same page about a morning routine, why not create one together?
Do things in the morning together with your partner to not only connect with yourself but also connect with the person you love the most.
This is a great motivation to follow a morning routine and empowers you both for a great day.
Can you imagine what your relationship will be like?
Not only do you connect with your partner on a whole other level, it also keeps you accountable.
Whenever one of you don’t want to wake up, you’ll disappoint your partner.
You can not let that happen, right?
What motivates better than your second half who counts on you?
This is the best motivation to keep your promise in doing a morning routine.
The rewards you receive as a couple for doing a morning routine together are for you to find out. But it’s no secret that the advantages are extraordinary.
Take Control Over Your Life
No one lives to work. Yet, many of us wake up to go to work. After a long day at work, you get stuck in traffic. You barely make it in time for dinner. After dinner, you want to relax on the couch. Then you realize it’s already time for bed. Ugh…
Implementing a morning routine gives you the quality time that you deserve. Instead of promising yourself that you’ll do the things once you get home, why not do them before you leave?
Before you get to work, you’re not tired yet. You need to give yourself some of this quality time!
Rise Early, Sleep Early
If you find it difficult to wake up early, why don’t start with sleeping earlier? If you’re tired in the evenings anyway, there’s no benefit in staying awake.
Once you start sleeping earlier you notice that you wake up in a better mood. Sure, you still have to leave your comfortable bed. But if you push yourself through this short moment of discomfort, you start to notice that you feel much more in control of your life.
Start your days with time for yourself. You immediately feel like you’re having the control over your own life. No longer will you feel like a puppet.
Start with some quick wins to get the ball rolling. Don’t snooze your alarm. Make up your bed once you wake up for a quick win. And also, don’t forget to drink 2 glasses of water to improve your skin and activate your metabolism and brains.
If you’re serious about taking the control over your own life, make the first hour of the day your hour. This is the time to exercise, do some form of meditation, and improve your mind through reading.
If you find it difficult to wake up earlier, start by going to bed earlier. Staying up until late is most often not productive. Besides, what are you doing this late anyway?
Rather take your time to rest now and wake up early to feel awesome.
